  • iPhone is the most reliable phone on the planet, 300% more reliable than Samsung
    • FixYa compiled information from over 720,000 phone issue reports and measured it against market share data from StatCounter.
    • With a score of 3.47% it was 300% more reliable than Samsung’s handsets. The Korean tech company’s phones were given a lowly score of 1.21. Nokia finished third on 0.68 whereas Motorola did really poorly, finishing bottom of the pile with a measly 0.31.

    • iWatch - lots of rumors circulating around this now
    • Google Glass - announced it would be compatible with iPhone (and Android)

  • Mobile Telecom World - Barcelona
    • Big show - 1,500 comapnies, 70,000 visitors
    • New devices announced: Samsung 8 inch tablet (Galaxy Note 8.0), HP Slate 7 (7 inch tablet), Mozilla’s firefox phone OS
    • Fourth-generation Technology
    • Owners of Ford models with SYNC AppLink can access Spotify's catalog of more than 20 million songs
    • GM said it was switching to AT&T Inc from Verizon Wireless to provide high-speed wireless service for its 2015 vehicle models.
  • Announced - Google’s Chromebook (13” touchscreen laptop) $1299, 32 gig solid state drive, 4 gig memroy

 

3. Main Segment: Do you own your technology or does Technology own you

 

  • Is Smart making us Dumb?
    • Article by EVGENY MOROZOV - book  "To Save Everything, Click Here: The Folly of Technological Solutionism," to be published March 5 by PublicAffairs.
    • Makes the point that some technology companies (Google being one) and computer scientist see the physical world as a broken place and can be fixed by providing “smart devices”
    • Starts by describing the BinCam - "smart" trash bin that aims to revolutionize the recycling process
    • "Good smart" leave people in complete control and seeks to enhance our decision-making by providing more information (smart watches, phones)
    • "Bad smart," by contrast, makes certain choices and behaviors impossible - believes people are incapable of making wise choices
    • Smart bench - an art project making the point of “bad smart” - Bench Equipped with a timer and sensors that starts tilting after a set time, creating an incline that eventually dumps its occupant.
    • Its nice when things around us run smoothly but its even better when they don’t because making thoughtful decisions (both good and bad) is how we learn and mature into responsible adults.
    • Bad smart could lead us to intellectual poverty by attempting to do everything for us and removing the creative process
    • Autopia (Disney attraction) cars that run on an enclosed track (they cannot be wrecked / they basically drive themselves)
    • Self driving cars (developed by Google) - road legal in Nevada and California 

 

  • The Next Story - Life and Faith after the Digital Explosion by Tim Challies
    • Great book that explores technology at a deeper level
    • Looks at the physical - how we interact with technology daily
      • History
      • Growth
      • Screens
    • Goes deeper to the spiritual level - how it can impact us as people
      • Morality
      • Increase in speed and amount of Communication
      • Mediated relationships
      • Distractions
      • Distortion of Truth and Authority
      • Digital fingerprints - Character, Integrity and Security
    • Great book that encourages us to think about the impacts of technology on us as individuals and as a result a society

A lot of people compared Winston to Apple's Siri personal assistant, but it's best to think of the app as a way to keep up with the latest news and social updates.
