2. Technology Review

  • New iPhones have arrived (first weekend stats)

    • Sold around 9 million

    • 78% of new iPhones sold globally are iPhone 5S models

    • US had highest concentration of new iPhones sold with 68%

    • Japan next with 13%

    • AT&T activated the most iPhones during the first full week of sales

       

  • Best features of the new iPhone 5s and iOS 7

    • Fingerprint scanner is a very nice feature and works without a hitch

    • Camera - another very nice upgrade

      • Slo-mo video very impressive and easy to use

    • Improved Airplay switching (do this from control panel)

      • Airplay from Apple TV is a bonus

    • Improved App Updates

      • Control Updates automatically (Settings>iTunes & App Store>Updates toggle)

      • Blue Dot next to updated apps

      • Updated List in App Store Updates section

    • Frequent locations show up in Notification Center (How long it will take to get home… it knows where home is)

      • Settings>Privacy>Location Services

      • Settings>Privacy>Location Services>System Services>Frequent Locations shows History of frequent locations

      • Shows list of frequent locations

      • Can switch this off if you want or clear the history

    • Spirit Level in Compass App

      • Swipe from right to left to get to it

      • Shows the horizontal level of your iPhone

      • Two bubbles that fit over each other with the degree reading

    • Block Callers & Messages & Facetime

      • Two ways to do this

      • Settings>Messages or Phone> Blocked

      • Turn on airplane mode… Siri tells you it will stop working

      • Siri keeps history of conversation on screen

      • Directions to Home (Siri must have location services turned on)

      • Male or Female voice for many languages

    • Motion sickness help (Parallax issues)

      • Turn off Parallax via General>Accessibility>Reduce Motion

    • Apps need permissions to use your iPhones microphone for first time

      • Security precaution

    • Sharing - Apple has added a few additional options

      • Facebook and Twitter have been available

      • New are Flickr for photos and Vimeo for videos

      • Airdrop (iOS and OSX versions to not interact… yet)

         

3. Briarwood School iPad Phase 2

  • Full rollout

  • Everything is working well

  • Students and teachers demonstrated program to the school board

  • Preparing for next phase rollout

  • ACSI and NY to present our system


4. Apps and Followings

    • App pick (popclip)  appears when you select text with your mouse on your Mac. Instantly copy & paste, and access actions like search, spelling, dictionary and over 90 more. Extensible.

    • App pick (RODE Rec) Professional audio recorder for iPhone and iPod touch

      • great job of recording audio

      • number of filters to reduce hiss, high pass filter, digital boost, rumble reducer

      • great editor built in

      • share/export to soundcloud, dropbox, ftp server, email

      • Formats: wave, aiff, acc, mp3, podcast (m4a), …

      • Use with the Rode SmartLav

    • hardware pick (RODE SmartLav)

      • Very simple lavalier Mic plugs directly into iPhone audio jack

      • Clip on to lapel and start talking

      • A little pricey but worth the convenience ($60 to $90 on the web)
