Outline: The Education Apple - episode 16

“The show that discusses Apple technology in the formal Classroom as well as in the classroom of our daily lives”

1. The Cast

  • Barrett Mosbacker, Superintendent of Briarwood Christian School, publisher Christian School Journal

  • Bill Brazeal, Technical Architect, Technology Specialist and Principal - ezNet Solutions

2. Week in Review

    • For Q1 of 2013, Apple’s iOS made up around 75% of total device activations in the enterprise market

    • Android came in second with around 25%, while Windows Phone and others took less than 1%

    • Of the top 10 devices, iOS accounts for 6 of the 10

    • Apple’s two latest smartphones, the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S were the top 2 devices

    • Apple’s “iOS smartphone” is the top device in terms of activation percentage, accounting for a little over 50% in Q1 2013. In second place, the iPad took around 24% of the activations, while Android smartphones were close behind at around 21%

  • Yahoo Sets Out to Spread the Word About the New Flickr With a TV Commercial

    • Yahoo’s recent Flickr redesign has been met with mixed reviews

    • They are displaying their commitment to the new Flickr with the first ever  Flickr TV commercial

    • Negative responses from some photographers to the redesign

    • Flickr’s own metrics seem to be very positive (site’s uploads are up 71-percent)

    • The commercial touts Flickr’s new terabyte of free space, high-res uploads, and eye-catching new layout

    • Yahoo’s way of saying that the new Flickr is here to stay, while spreading the conviction that Marris Mayer has, indeed, made Flickr awesome again

  • Apple's iAd Group to Handle iRadio Advertising Support

    • Apple is expected to debut the advertiser supported iRadio service next week at WWDC, similar to how Pandora’s mobile app works (Free service)

    • The shift in iAd’s focus to support the music service is being made by Eddy Cue, the senior vice president who oversees iTunes, App Store and iAd, as well as Todd Teresi, whom Apple hired last year from Adobe Systems Inc. to lead the company’s advertising business

    • Apple is using the data it holds for targeting users, which include movies, music, apps and more to entice advertisers to iAd

    • iAd has not been a big success since it was launched a couple of years ago. But this could be very lucrative new revenue stream

  • With over 500 million accounts, Apple is second only to Facebook

    • According to to a new research report from Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty, Apple's base of 500 million active user accounts is higher than any other company except for Facebook which has 1.05 billion accounts

    • Amazon, meanwhile, checks in at third place with 200 million accounts

    • A crucial difference, however, is that Apple has 500 million credit card accounts on file

    • Apple generates an average of US$329 per user, Amazon follows close behind with $305 per user

    • eBay is a distant third with $125 per user, Facebook, generates a paltry $5 in revenue per user

Rumor Category

  • With Jony Ive at the helm the user interface and design is set to take on a new look with less gloss, fewer textures and no skeuomorphism (physical ornament or design on an object made to resemble another material or technique)

  • Over the past few months, the operating system has been through a few different versions as Apple’s engineers and designers test it

  • Textures – there most likely won’t be many of them left. Jony Ive reportedly hates skeuomorphism. So say goodbye to the wood and fake felt textures in Game Center, or the Notes app’s yellow paper

  • Lock Screen will get a new look. The shiny, glossy time bar on top of the Lock Screen will be replaced with a much flatter, shine-free, black background. The passcode, the square grid used for entering your PIN will be replaced by round, black buttons with white text and borders

  • Notifications - Apple trying to improve them, the Notification Center drop down drawer will have a black/grey flat background with white text. It will also provide quick-access options for information - possibly for localized news feeds, and feature much-needed quick access toggles for services like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

  • Home Screen will see some minor changes. The apps will no longer have a glossy shine in the top half. All the default iOS apps will have their icons replaced by much flatter designs

  • Default Apps -Notes, Messages, App Store, iTunes, Newsstand and Calendar along with others will be made white and flat giving them a much more uniform look. It’s rumored that the Calendar could have red controls whereas the Messages app will be mostly white with green controls.

  • Some drastic changes to with the Weather.app to include some classy animations similar to the likes of Solar and Yahoo! Weather

  • Not many major new features, But, there could be deeper integration of Vimeo and Flickr and some new in-car optimization for Maps and Siri

Fun Category (Kickstarter)

3. How the Cloud and VoIP Have Changed How People Work (Article)

  • Telecommuting has been around for a good while but it is now beginning to pick up some real steam with it becoming much more easy to implement for the masses - Cloud computing and VoIP

  • Collaboration and oversight/management has been an issue in the past - companies had been reluctant to embrace it

  • Embracing Telecommuting is a result of two main factors: the enabling technology, and the emergence of a different business model

  • “Salesforce Chatter” other tools to allow for instant messaging and constant contact with peers and managers

  • Since Yahoo!'s Marissa Mayer made her pronouncement against telecommuting, issues of telepresence, telecommuting and teleworking have been in the news

  • School Environment - E-learning has nurtured an environment in which the physical boundaries of the classroom become irrelevant, and students can interact and participate in real time
