  • Apple reported net income of $9.5 billion, or $10.09 a share, on revenue of $43.6 billion (analysts predicted earnings of $10.01 a share)

  • Apple's iPhones make up roughly 65% to 70% of its profits

  • Apple sold 37.4 million iPhones and 19.5 million iPads

  • Apple delivered an increase to its dividend, boosting it 15% to $3.05 a share.

  • Apple reported a gross margin of 37.5% (38.5% gross margin in the fourth quarter and 47.4% in the same year-ago period)

  • Apple still has a stash of $144.7 billion in cash and investments

  • Rival Google last week reported a 16% uptick in profit on a 22% rise in revenue from a year ago

  • Google's Android now commands nearly 70% of the worldwide smartphone market compared with Apple's 21% share for iOS

  • Expectations are high for Apple’s new product announcements

  • AT&T sold 6 million smartphones Q1 2013 and 75%-80% were iPhones (4.8 million iPhone activations)

  • Netflix shares surged nearly 24% to $215.84 in pre-market trading Tuesday

  • Posted net income of $3 million in the first quarter vs. a loss of $5 million a year ago

  • Drew 2 million new streaming customers - had a strong reception for its original program - “House of Cards” a Washington political drama (spend $100 million on the drama including a second season)

  • Cards release had a “halo effect on the entire service”

  • Netflix - 29.2 millions streaming subscribers vs HBO 28.7 million paid subscribers

  • Reddit - front page of the internet

  • Investigators were concerned that if they didn’t assert control over the release of the Tsarnaevs’ photos, their manhunt would become a chaotic free-for-all

  • News media cars and helicopters, as well as online vigilante detectives

  • F.B.I. stressed that all information had to flow to 911 and official investigators

  • Only the pictures the FBI released were to be considered the official suspects

  • FBI received a tip from one of the victims saying he had seen one of the bombers. And, one of the brother's aunts phoned the F.B.I. to identify them.

  • Tuesday, at 1:07 p.m. ET tweet from the Associated Press exclaimed “Breaking: Two Explosions in the White House and Barack Obama is injured.”

  • Sent the Dow Jones industrial average into free-fall and erasing nearly $200 billion off the broader market’s value.

  • This is yet another reminder that social media isn’t simply mindless messages about what you're eating for breakfast, but that it can have massive, real-world consequences


     Fun Stuff Category

 

 

  • Features an integrated iPhone doc

  • Features a specialized app used to control certain functions of the vehicle, deliver oil and coolant temperatures, provide diagnostic information, and more.

  • The iBeetle will be available starting in early 2014, and pre-orders will begin this October.

  • Not an iCar but it is interesting

  • iOS app released last Thursday morning and web site was turned on later in the day

  • Very nice design

  • Listen to iTunes preview by default

  • Link to Spotify or Rdio account for complete tracks

  • Music discovery works in four different tabs: Popular (New music trending), Emerging (Hidden talent found in tweets), Suggested (Artist you might like), and Now Playing (tweeted by people you follow).

  • Both the Popular and Emerging pages display 140 artists, a cute reference to the fact that tweets can be a maximum of 140 characters.

  • Highly social - tweet about songs and see what others are tweeting about


3. BCS Learning Unleashed Update


    • Barrett - What’s new with the program?

  • Tremendous response from teachers, 31 signed up voluntarily for June iBook Author training, teachers asking us to move faster with iPad deployment, they want to create whole units of study using iTunes U

  • We will be providing level 2 training next year

  • I just signed another agreement for a second full year of training with Apple

  • John and I are working on the Google training conference for Aug.
