Outline: The Education Apple - episode 25

“The show that discusses Apple technology in the formal Classroom as well as in the classroom of our daily lives”

1. The Cast

  • Barrett Mosbacker, Superintendent of Briarwood Christian School, publisher Christian School Journal

  • Bill Brazeal, Technical Architect, Technology Specialist and Principal - ezNet Solutions

2. Technology Review

    • Purchase decision on the type of iDevice has become more complex

    • How you use is more of a factor now as opposed to functionality the iDevice can provide

    • This is because iOS is becoming more similar to OSX and iCloud can sync most all of your data

    • Both platforms have voice commands and Siri

      • Mavericks can take dictation when not on internet - Siri on iOS can do more than ever before

    • iLife suite has been extended to iOS for free now - Photo, Video, Music creation can be done on both platforms now

      • Content sharing easier on both

      • Sharing to AppleTV easy from either iOS or OSX

    • iTunes - music, movies, tv shows, lectures, etc.

    • iBooks just added to Mavericks

      • Excellent, would like to see PDF annotation added

    • iWork Suite of apps free on all iOS and OSX device new purchases - new Collaboration features extend functionality

    • Flickr and Vimeo added to Twitter and Facebook integrated sharing

    • iCloud shares bookmarks, history, reading list, tabs, iCloud Keychain

    • What About Airdrop???

      • Yes, this was a disappointment, would like to airdrop between IOS and OSX

    • Will this strategy of merging functionality - cause more or less iDevice purchases?

  • Apple Promises iWork Features To Return Over The Next Six Months

    • New version of iWork is free but has lost some functionality from 2009

    • Caused lots of negative response

    • Apple’s response:

      • The new iWork applications-Pages, Numbers, and Keynote-were released for Mac on October 22nd. These applications were rewritten from the ground up to be fully 64-bit and to support a unified file format between OS X and iOS 7 versions, as well as iWork for iCloud beta.

      • These apps feature an all-new design with an intelligent format panel and many new features such as easy ways to share documents, Apple-designed styles for objects, interactive charts, new templates, and new animations in Keynote.

      • In rewriting these applications, some features from iWork ’09 were not available for the initial release. We plan to reintroduce some of these features in the next few releases and will continue to add brand new features on an ongoing basis.

    • Features apple will add back over the next 6 months:

      • Pages:

  • Customize toolbar

  • Vertical ruler

  • Improved alignment guides

  • Improved object placement

  • Import of cells with images

  • Improved word counts

  • Keyboard shortcuts for styles

  • Manage pages and sections from the thumbnail view

    • Numbers:

  • Customize toolbar

  • Improvements to zoom and window placement

  • Multi-column and range sort

  • Auto-complete text in cells

  • Page headers and footers

  • Improvements to AppleScript support

    • Keynote:

  • Customize toolbar

  • Restoring old transitions and builds

  • Improvements to presenter display

  • Improvements to AppleScript support

  • Buckle Up: Apple’s Next 3 Years Will Be Insane

    • Between 2007 and 2010, Apple introduced the first iPhone and the first iPad

    • Since then three year cycle has been “refinement”

    • In some respects Apple has to wait for technology (Bluetooth Low Energy) to catch up (and be cost effective) to introduce new products

    • Question: Will Apple enter new markets again?

    • Answer: Yes - technology and content deals will make this happen

    • 4 Products

      • iWatch - likely to be delivered next year, BLE, curved glass from Corning, better battery and power management

        • Apple patent surfaced this week - exploiting BLE for data exchange in a very efficient manner

      • iTV - 4K displays need to become affordable, content licensing deals are needed - usability and content delivery is the key

      • iOS for Cars - Apple Maps, iTunes Radio, Siri (already inclusion on a small scale but this will likely be greatly expanded)

      • Desktop iPad - large screen too big to carry

    • All of these will take advantage of software services that Apple provides and is constantly refining

3. Briarwood School iPad Program

4. Apps and Followings

  • Barrett -

    • iPhoto: Creating and sharing a photo stream

  • Twitter pick ()

  • Bill -

    • Tip ( iOS 7 - Control which apps use cellular vs WiFi connection)

      • Settings | Cellular icon

        • Cellular data OFF completely / Enable LTE / Data Roaming controls

        • Use Cellular Data For: (each app can be toggled ON or OFF independently)

        • Each app shows how much data it has been sending/receiving
