Outline: The Education Apple - episode 13

“The show that discusses Apple ˜technology in the formal Classroom as well as in the classroom of our daily lives”

1. The Cast

  • Barrett Mosbacker, Superintendent of Briarwood Christian School

  • Bill Brazeal, Technical Architect, Technology Specialist and Principal - ezNet Solutions

2. Week in Review

    • Yahoo has long been one of the data providers for iOS devices

    • Expanded sports data and content from Yahoo News onto iOS, presumably through Siri or other built-in apps

    • Apple has cut ties with Google in the formal sense, pulling Google Maps and YouTube apps from standard load

    • CEO Marissa Mayer has made it clear that mobile is a major part of her strategy for improving the company's fortunes

    • Nothing formal yet but I would look for it to be coming (and Yahoo needs it)

  • AT&T to support HD Voice over 4G later this year

    • AT&T Senior Vice President Kris Rinne announced that the carrier would begin supporting HD Voice (also known as Wideband audio) over its 4G LTE network later this year

    • Great news for AT&T iPhone 5 customers (Requires LTE)

    • Other carriers are considering the same

  • Facebook Gets a Hold on Phones

    • New suite of software Facebook is introducing for Android phones on Friday called Facebook Home

    • Available on four leading Android phones, including the very popular Samsung Galaxy S III. It also will be available Friday, preloaded, on a midrange, $99 model, the HTC First, from AT&T

    • Big plus for Facebook users and will make Facebook easier to access and use

    • It does interfere with some lock screen features (camera, weather information, favorite apps)

    • First of Facebook Home app screens contains Facebook’s apps, including Instagram, plus apps from other companies, like Google Maps and Google Search, and the camera app.

    • Possible because Android allows third-party companies to alter the lock screen and other core features - Apple’s iPhone does not

    • Facebook Home features: Cover Feed, Chat Heads, No Advertisements for now

    • Very clever, especially since Facebook and Google don’t really like each other

    • Facebook Home is optional, but...

  • Following iPad release, Google rolls out free Android and iPhone versions of Quickoffice for Apps customers

    • Google’s Quickoffice is meant for business users that have to share files and collaborate with users who don’t yet use Google Docs

    • Lets you open and edit any Office files you’ve stored in Google Drive

    • In December 2012, Google stopped offering Google Apps for free; the premium version still costs $50 per user, per year

    • Create, Edit, View: Word, Excel and Powerpoint

    • Designed for both iPhone and iPad

  • Rumor: Apple television with 'iRing' motion controller to launch this year

    • Ring will act as a "navigation pointer" for the television, and the TV set will detect  motion for some of the functionality found in a remote

    • 60 inch iTV screen

    • Will come with a "mini iTV" screen that will allow users to view content on a smaller 9.7-inch display (basically an iPad screen) - this secondary display could also be used for home security, phone calls, video conferencing...

    • mini iTV will capture content from main iTV up to 200 meters away

    • iRing could possibly complement the rumored iWatch

    • Apple's television and the included accessories to be priced between $1,500 and $2,500
