  • Black Friday (and beyond - cyber week) Cyber Shopping
    • Amazon’s global revenue in 2011 totalled $46.5 billion (dominant player)
    • Walmart hoping to do $9 billion in global e-commerce in 2014
    • Big box stores not as flexible as online only stores
      • Big box stores online prices have to match in store prices
      • Amazon uses computer algorithms to adjust prices automatically
      • Brick and mortar stores cannot ignore e-commerce as it has reached 5.2% in third quarter (steadily risen since 1999)
  • Apps that have had major updates this week
    • iTunes 11
      • No More Sidebar (but you can get it back) - Section buttons at the top
      • Expanded View - click on album cover and get colorful panel showing all songs (works for movies and TV shows)
      • Up Next - Queue of songs - place any song at top of the list to play it next
      • Real Streaming from iCloud - play without downloading (you can still download by clicking on the cloud icon if you want)
      • MiniPlayer - New features such as Search and Up Next
      • CoverFlow gone - not considered very useful
      • Find duplicate entries is gone but will return  
    • Zite
      • Reformatted to look more like a magazine
      • Some images take up too much space (working on algorithms to fix)
      • Some Headlines are not real informative (working on algorithms to fix)
      • Link to your other accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Pocket, Google Reader) so Zite can suggest interested topics
      • Popular, Zite’s Picks, New & Noteworthy Sections
      • Quicklist - where you can put Subjects you want to follow
      • Reader mode (Zite’s minimalistic mode) and Web mode
      • Share to Evernote, Twitter, Facebook...
  • Google has test version of new mapping app for iPhone
    • It has not been submitted for app store approval yet
    • Maps are considered to be one of the most important apps - integrated with other apps for shopping, driving, locating destinations, etc
    • Apple Maps fiasco had big implications - CEO apology, Forstall’s firing, ...
    • New Google version expected to have turn-by-turn navigation
    • Youtube app was removed by Apple with iOS 6, Google has made a downloadable app for Youtube and it is one of the most popular free apps downloaded


3. Main segments

  • Barrett -
    • Technology Integration into Education. Pilot program for iPad rollout is underway. Parent meetings were held last week informing them of the details of the program. Everyone is very possitive about the Pilot and great feedback has been obtained.
    • A great deal of planning has been done and this should really pay off as the Pilot progresses.

 

  • Bill -
    • How to Place iCloud Folder in Finder Sidebar
      • Open “~/Library/Mobile Documents” and start a Spotlight search
        (To find this folder select “Go” on Finder Menu and press Option key)
      • Select “Mobile Documents”, Click the “plus” button, and set parameter to “Kind” is “Document”
      • Click the “Save” button and make sure the “Add to Sidebar” box is checked
      • Name is something like “iCloud” and then position it in the Finder list where you want (it will show up at the bottom of the Favorites list to begin with)
      • Comes in handy when you have to use Time Machine.

    • Today’s Tim Cook comments. (“Intensely interested” in TV market. And bringing Mac manufacturing back to the US.)

    • CloudMagic is free for now. The are coming up with a paid plan soon.
    • Extremely Fast, Nice to have all search results in one place

    • Asana is the shared task list for your team.  The place to plan, organize & sync.
    • Multiple Workspaces that you can define Projects or Tasks in
    • Assign Team members and collaborators to Workspaces
    • Follow task and project status in real time (see changes immediately)
    • Activity feeds for everything - see history and discussions on each task
    • Free for groups under 30, Nice iphone app and ipad html5 to go with website
